Vicellotar 'V'
| Home   |  Back to gallery

The Vicellotar 'V' features a Barbera 5 string Twin Hybrid transducer bridge, that  can be powered by a variety of custom designed systems:

The tuning is as follows from low to high: G-D-A-E-B (one octave below a violin).
Yet the Vicellotar 'V' still has the full high range of a violin as well.
If you were to capo the 5th stop, the instrument would be very close to the same scale length as a violin, (just .200" over a violin's scale) and the pitch would be exactly the same as a 5 string violin (cgdae).
The reason for this gradual design change from my original bulkier lower tuned (deabf#) Vicellotar was;
I basically wanted to be able to play anything that a violinist could play, and yet still have an extra octave of lower notes as well....
I have always loved the violins range, but like many electric violinists, I wanted more low range as well.
Also, that fact that I need to play the violin in a non-guitar like position, is why I designed the instrument to be played on my leg similar to a cello position (or exactly like a Viola Da Gamba), which is much closer to a guitar type position compared to violin playing position.
Because the Vicellotar 'V' is  designed to be played balanced on the left upper leg, it was made to be a very lightweight compact instrument.

The fingerboard on the 'V' also has 32 paua and delrin intonation marker points on the side, as well as 32 temporarily 'drawn on' fret lines
(these lines will fade over the years of practice)
I find that the lines help speed up the intense learning curve (almost twice that of a violin!) required to play this instrument.
Perfect pitch will eventually be learned ear to tactile scan, so the lines are nothing more then temporary visual reference points.

Note:
Since Vicellotars are not held the same way as a guitar, they will of course be designed with a different neck shape.

Note on strings:
The strings I use on the 5 string 5th tuned Vicellotar V's are:
Thomastik-Infeld, Spirocore, Viola strings,  Heavy ("Stark") tension.
along with a standard .011" plain guitar string for the high B string
The instrument is specifically designed around this string.

Also:
These strings are not stock strings; they are modified by carefully cutting the silk windings off just to the area where the metal underwindings end near the ball ends as well as the other end of the strings just where the metal underwindings start to end..
Once the silks are removed I add just a drop of super glue to hold the remaining silks in place.
In other words a full 18" of bare string is exposed in order to fit the strings on the Vicellotar V's
This process is quite easy to do, but I can also do this for you at an additional charge if you are worried about damaging your strings.

Custom designed Preamp/Buffer and MIDI ready systems:
Add $450 For a Graphtech Hexpander MIDI ready system wooden box
(similar to this one seen above, but made with much nicer exotic that you choose!)

This completely hand crafted shielded wooden box features The Graphtech Hexpander MIDI ready system that uses the standard 13 pin din output that all GK Roland ready /Axon type guitar systems use.

NOTE: these units are -not- MIDI, but they are "MIDI ready"...
In order to run any midi ready bowed instrument with MIDI, you would also need to purchase a rack-mount unit called a Zeta Synthony , because the nature of bowed instruments will not work correctly with standard guitar/bass MIDI converters.
I have also had very nice success running the Graphtech Hexpander MIDI ready system directly into the Roland VG-8 and/or VG-88  systems as well.
(Your custom box will be similar to the one seen above, but made with much nicer exotic woods that you choose!)

Add $300 For a 5 string Preamp/Buffer box
Add $350 For a 6 string Preamp/Buffer box

This  hand crafted completely shielded wooden box features  extremely quiet, totally transparent, multiple output Piezo Preamp/Buffers (the one shown above features 6 buffers ), for fine tuning each string's output balance and tone via a mixing console
The system is point to point hand wired by Bill Dennison, and hand made by TK Instruments.
Or:
Add $175 For a Mono Preamp/Buffer box with 1 master volume.
This completely hand crafted shielded wooden box features 1 mono Piezo Preamp/Buffer with master volume control and a wooden knob.
The idea behind this very simple design is an extremely quiet, totally transparent buffer that allows the natural sound the  Barbara transducers  to come through completely unhindered.
This system is point to point hand wired by Bill Dennison, and hand made by TK Instruments.

The Vicellotar can also be ran mono into a variety of other piezo type buffer/preamps; such as an LR Baggs Para D.I.
(also available through TK Instruments)
